IPL 2019: Jacques Kallis Hails Andre Russell, Calls Him a Powerful Hitter
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all-rounder Andre Russell kept all the fans present at the Eden Gardens on their toes as he snatched a victory from jaws of defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 24. He played an unbeaten knock of 49 off just 19 balls to help side start the campaign with a win. Russell’s clean hitting was the talking point after the game and the Knight Riders’ head coach Jacques Kallis hailed the talismanic Windies all-rounder.
Russell a clean striker
Chasing 184, Kolkata lost Chris Lynn in the second over which pushed them on the backfoot. But Nitish Rana and Robin Uthappa added 80 runs for the second wicket to put the Knight Riders back on track. But a sudden dismissal of Uthappa followed by skipper Dinesh Karthik and then Rana in quick succession helped Hyderabad peg back into the game. Striving at 118 for four, the home side needed 66 runs from just 27 deliveries.
Since then, Andre Russell, who was not in a good form in the Pakistan Super League, stormed back to form with a match-winning knock. He launched a carnage against the Sunrisers bowlers hitting everything that came his way. He smacked four fours and sixes each, well supported by Shubman Gill (18 of 10) to steal a win.
KKR’s head coach Jacque Kallis shared high praise on Andre Russell saying that he is one of the clean strikers of the cricket ball. Also, Kallis added Russell ball-striking was one of the best he has seen in a long time.
“It was one of the best ball-striking displays I have seen in a long time,” Kallis said on Monday. “He is one of the most powerful hitters I have seen. It was a good knock and he timed it well,” Kallis stated.
Needed a special knock: Kallis
The former South African cricketer also added that he has seen Andre Russell bat in many occasion. He knows till the time Russell is in the crease there is a very good opportunity to win. Jacques Kallis also reiterated that they needed an outstanding innings and Russell came up with it.
“I have seen him (Russell) go about his business. So as long as he was in there, hitting as well as he does, we knew we always had a chance. We needed a special knock and it was,” the former Proteas all-rounder added.
In conclusion, Jacques Kallis also praised young Shubman Gill who sealed the clash with two sixes off Shakib Al Hasan in the final over. Kolkata Knight Riders will look to continue their winning run going when they face Kings XI Punjab on March 27 at the Eden Gardens.
