The young batsman Shubman Gill showed great maturity with the bat as he guided Kolkata Knight Riders to a seven-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Gill remained unbeaten on 65 runs as the visiting team chased down the target convincingly.
Batting first, Nichols Pooran and Sam Curran helped Kings XI Punjab post 183 runs on the board. Meanwhile, Punjab didn’t had a good start as they lost their openers – KL Rahul and Chris Gayle. Since then, Mayank Agarwal combined well with Pooran to bail their team before Agarwal departed. Pooran was in full mood as he took on the Kolkata bowlers. Mandeep Singh succeeded Mayank who also chipped in with few crucial runs before Curran launched an absolute carnage.
The all-rounder from England struck everything scoring 55 runs off just 24 deliveries including seven fours and two sixes. He gave the momentum to the Kings XI Punjab innings as they posted a challenging total on the scoreboard.
However, it was not enough for the Punjab bowlers to defend as Chris Lynn went berserk in the powerplay overs. He took on young Arshdeep Singh to make the Punjab team feel the nerves. On the other hand, Shubman Gill held the fort from the other end focusing mainly on rotating the strike. Robin Uthappa and Andre Russell played small cameo before Dinesh Karthik and Gill finished off in style. Gill remained unbeaten on 65 runs including five fours and two sixes, making the most of the opportunity while Karthik scored 21 off nine.
Meanwhile, it was Shubman Gill’s matured knock which was the highlight of Kolkata’s victory. He earned praise from all over the world, and Kevin Pietersen tagged as India’s next biggest superstar.
