It was one of the greatest comebacks in the history of IPL as Kings XI Punjab registered a 14 runs victory against the Delhi Capitals in the 13th match of the tournament courtesy some exceptional bowling and some horrendous batting by the Delhi Capitals. The match was done and dusted and DC required to score at a run a ball. However, they lost 7 wickets for just 8 runs in 17 deliveries which eventually handed Punjab a memorable 14 runs victory.
Earlier in the day, it was Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer who won the toss and opted to field. Chris Gayle was dropped from the game and Sam Curran was asked to open the innings with KL Rahul. The southpaw looked in good touch. However, both batters were dismissed in quick succession which put Punjab in the backfoot.
Sarfaraz Khan and David Miller shared a good partnership which helped Punjab claw their way back into the game. Sarfaraz was dismissed on 38 during a crucial juncture of the game. David Miller played a good knock and just like Sarfaraz he was dismissed just when Punjab was hoping to go for the big shots.
The Delhi Capitals made a good comeback with the ball in the last few overs as Punjab eventually managed to score 166 in their allotted 20 overs. Delhi Capitals got off t the worst possible start losing the wicket of Prithvi Shaw in the very first delivery of the innings. Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan built a good partnership to get DC back on track.
Dhawan was dismissed by Ravichandran Ashwin which broke the partnership. However, Delhi Capitals was well on course after Rishabh Pant and Colin Ingram shared a great partnership. It was in the last 4 overs that Delhi Capitals made a stunning comeback. Mohammed Shami bowled two exceptional overs and was supported brilliantly by Sam Curran.
The left-arm pacer bagged a wicket in the final delivery of his 3rd over and came back to bag his hat-trick in the final two deliveries of the match. Sam Curran was at his very best and was undoubtedly awarded the Man of the Match Award for his exceptional all-round performance.
Here is what Sam Curran said at the post-match presentation
Great win for the guys. I tried to put a performance for my team. Luckily enough, we scraped to 166, all the six bowlers were excellent. I have worked a lot on my batting over the last few months. I like to work hard on my batting, bowling and fielding. I have opened in school cricket, but think that was the first time in professional cricket.
Hopefully, we keep winning games.I didn’t really know (about the hat-trick). The crowd got really loud, I couldn’t hear myself. Ash told me what to do. Ryan Harris was standing at the third man region. Against the Iocal batters, I had to ask our players, “Where does he hit?”. Shami got two amazing overs in the end which helped.
