Delhi Capitals (DC) banked on a spectacular knock of Rishabh Pant to begin their 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on a high beating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 37 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on March 24.

Chasing a massive target of 214 runs, Mumbai Indians never looked on course to chase down the target. Although Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock added 33 runs within the first four overs, once the floodgates opened, they lost wickets at regular intervals. Ishant Sharma, who has turned up for his home franchise for the first time in 12 years, provided an early breakthrough dismissing skipper Rohit. Soon after, Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer produced a masterpiece on the field to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav to help his side gain an early advantage.

Delhi bowlers continued to pose questions and in the process, Ishant Sharma made de Kock his second bunny. Since then, Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard – two veterans of the game tried to stitch a partnership. Yuvraj looked in great touch as he found the gaps easily. Just when Mumbai looked to bounce back, Delhi struck twice to send half of the Mumbai batters packing. Meanwhile, Krunal Pandya tried his best to chase down the target but perished while trying to match up to the asking rate.

Yuvraj Singh who bagged a deal with the Mumbai Indians at his base price lived upto his expectation with a good knock but it was not enough for the Mumbai Indians to seal the victory.

Pant lead the charge for Delhi Capitals

Previously, Rishabh Pant came in like thunder and smashed everything that came his way. While some of the shots were clumsy but most effective power-hitting in recent times. His 78 off 27 balls including seven fours and sixes each effort has powered Capitals to an amazing 213.

Both the Mumbaikars – Prithvi Shaw and skipper Shreyas Iyer failed to make an impact at their home ground and Delhi Capitals were rocked early by Mitchell McClenaghan. But then Colin Ingram joined Shikhar Dhawan for the fourth wicket and they both did a stellar job to bail their team out. Both were dismissed around the same time and one would have thought that will peg Delhi back. But the reverse happened as Pant launched a carnage at the Wankhede. He didn’t show mercy on any bowler, not even Jaspritn Bumrah as the Capitals have put up a fabulous total on the board.

Delhi Capitals will look on to carry on the momentum when they play their second game against Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
