It was Steve Smith who won the toss and put the hosts in. It was a pretty ordinary start from the hosts as they lost the wicket of Chris Lynn in the very first over of Varun Aaron. The fast bowler who had only bowled a solitary over in the tournament up till now looked in terrific rhythm and breached the defence of Lynn with great delivery.
He kept on persisting with the same line and length and swung the ball prodigiously. He got his 2nd wicket when Shubhman Gill had no idea to a delivery which came back sharply. KKR stuttered in the middle overs quite a bit but it was skipper Dinesh Karthik who kept them in the game with some wonderful strokeplay.

Eventually, he was left stranded on 97 when their allotted 20 overs came to an end. His knock of 97 included 7 fours and 9 hits over the fence.
