IPL 2019: Prithvi Shaw Excited to Open for Delhi Capitals with Shikhar Dhawan

Young top order batsman Prithvi Shaw is all set to don the Delhi Capitals jersey when they begin their IPL 12 campaign with a group match against the Mumbai Indians on 24th March. Prithvi Shaw is looking to break into the Indian ODI team. He set his hopes of making a good comeback to competitive cricket when he played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, a tournament aggregate of 134 runs in 8 matches didn’t help his cause.

One more concern for Prithvi Shaw ahead of the World is he will be representing a franchise who are the underachievers of the tournament. The Delhi Capitals who were previously Delhi Daredevils is the only team from the initial batch to have never reached the final of the tournament. Delhi has finished at the bottom of the ladder on 4 occasions in the history of IPL. It will surely be another challenge for Prithvi who hopes to break into the Indian ODI team in the near future.

He might not be a potential option for the World Cup. However a terrific season with the bat will still keep him in the scheme of things, Shaw made his IPL debut last year and scored only 245 runs from 9 matches. He looked in great touch in some of the matches. Shaw feels that Delhi Capitals have a perfect team this time around. The 20-year-old is expected to open for the Delhi Capitals.

Shaw will be partnered by sensational left-handed batsman Shikhar Dhawan. The young gun is excited to open the innings with Shikhar Dhawan. “It all looks pretty perfect to me. In batting, Shikkhi bhai (Shikhar Dhawan) is back and he is going to be a key player for us. With [Mohammad] Kaif sir’s inputs, we promise to become a better fielding unit.” he said. “We had done a good job last year with the ball. It’s going to be a very crucial year for us and we are really looking forward to it. Everyone knows their role and is quite mature to understand what their job is. If you talk about responsibility then I think everyone is up for it.”

The 20-year-old batsman spoke on his injury and how the two month lay off owing to the ankle injury affected him. Shaw was ruled out of the first two Tests in Australia after twisting his ankle. He was in contention for selection in the last couple of Tests. However, he was sent back from the tour which raised a question mark over his focus. Dismissing those rumours, Shaw explained how the injury was worse than what it seemed.

“I was progressing well till a point. I felt that I would be able to play by the time the third Test began in Melbourne. But then I realised that the speed at which my ankle was recovering wasn’t the same,” he said. “The rate at which I was getting better dipped and I couldn’t take that final jump which could have made me available to play the final Test. That’s when the physio took a call and I was sent to the NCA.

“I was upset. I couldn’t play but these things happen. When I came to Bangalore and did my rehab, I was feeling good. My ankle was getting better – the way I was moving, training. I was getting there. When I went to Bangalore after two months of training, I felt I was ready. We won the Australia Tests so that was pretty big.

“Everything was perfect over there (NCA). I did a lot of sessions there. I was working to get fit before Mushtaq Ali T20 as I wanted to get used to the T20 format and then go to the IPL. That’s how I had planned my two months of rehab. Trainers and physio were very committed.”
