IPL 2019: RCB Coach Gary Kirsten Hints at ‘Structural Changes’ in 2020

It is the sixth time for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) that they were unable to make it to the playoffs. Whereas, it is their second consecutive poor season under the tutelage of former Indian coach Gary Kirsten.

Coach Kirsten, during a press conference, spoke about the need for some “structural changes” for the next edition while focusing on “continuity”.

Ahead of RCB’s last game of the season, Kirsten highlighted the team’s mistakes. He suggested the way forward to change their fortune next year.

“I have been a fan of continuity. You want to build core of players and culture and keep coming back to same players. I think most successful franchises in IPL have done that and we are searching for that in RCB. There might be structural change next year,” Kirsten told to reporters prior to RCB’s final game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

If RCB loose, they will have to bear the stigma of the last placed finish

Meanwhile, the two consecutive seasons when Bangalore was unable to make to the playoffs. This certainly puts a question of whether Kirsten will be the mentor of the team next year.

Somehow the World Cup-winning coach has still not able to figure IPL out as he had the same fate with Delhi Daredevils (DC) now Capitals.

RCB’s team management has still not said anything about Kirsten’s future. But it’ll be nothing short of a surprise if he manages to keep his coach position in the 13th edition of the IPL in 2020.

Kirsten said the franchises that keep changing and editing every year run into problems.

He said, “I am hopeful and confident that we stick to continuity of players. Because we need to really start building core of players we believe in and back. Franchises that do a lot of chopping and changing every year, run into problems. Because IPL is not about an individual performing every IPL. It will just not happen, but if you keep backing the guys they can come good for you in one season,”

When asked about their planning for next year’s fortune, Kirsten said that being the head coach of the team he can plainly see where the long term weaknesses reside. He noted with discussion with the owners of the franchise. There will be some structural changes to be made.

“It is not difficult to iron out the areas we struggled with,” he added.

Kirsten also mentioned that to win, a team has to hide their weaknesses and make sure their strengths work; that’s what makes a difference to the world.

Meanwhile, he also said that losing early matches in the tournament had gotten to them.

“Two big games against Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders cost us. These games we should have won. If those kinds of games you are not winning, it is going to affect us. Because we know IPL is incredibly predictable and games you should be winning, you need to win,” he said.

Replying to a query, Kirsten said that they were missing 3-4 players this year, primarily the Australian fast bowler Nathan Coulter Nile.

“We are missing three to four players. One of the toughest things we have to deal with this season is our international fast bowler never arrived – Nathan Coulter-Nile,” he said.

However, Kirsten said that with the team they have picked, they were going to win their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 4th May. And when asked for his comment on the skipper Virat Kohli asking his players to enjoy the remaining game, he said, “My view is, you have fun when you are winning. So we understand the point he is making. But I think it is always going to be tough if you are not winning games.”

He also spoke about how all the players, seniors and newcomers, are feeling the pressure of the game. He said it is important for them to understand the knack of preparing for T20 tournaments as the IPL.

In response to a query asked, Kirsten said it had been a disappointing season for RCB.

Adding they could manage just two points in the first half. Thus, it became really difficult for them to pull things back.

“This has been a disappointing season. RCB would like to have had better results. We could manage only two points in the first half (first seven games). We started to get things going our way in the second half. But unfortunately in IPL you have a bad start, you are always going to be struggling and winning seven out of seven,” he said.

Kirsten said that he knows where they have done it wrong. And whilst there might be some structural changes, he has his hopes for them to make their comeback in the game next season.
