IPL 2019: Responsibility Is On The Indiviual To Take A Call, Says Sachin Tenulkar On Workload Management During IPL

Before the start of IPL 2019, the talk of whether the World Cup-bound players should take rest during the T20 league or not has been garnering limelight.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli, head coach Ravi Shastri and others have had their say on it. Majority of them have asked players to play in the league.

Amidst this, Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar had also commented on the matter and has said that it is the responsibility of the individual to take a call about it.

“To me, momentum is important. Every individual should be smart enough to assess if he needs to take a break or he needs to play games to stay in the thick of things. So the responsibility is on the individual to take a call,” he told PTI.

“As a pace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah’s workload will be very different from a pure batsman like Virat Kohli and a wicket-keeper batsman like MS Dhoni. All these players have a lot of experience and they will certainly make the right call,” he said further.

It is to be noted that Tendulkar is himself a part of Mumbai Indians’ franchise as its icon.

India’s limited-overs vice-captain, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Burmah are also a part of the three-time champion team.

As Tendulkar mentioned, the responsibility will be on the players to manage their workload.

Kohli also stressed on the same fact after the end of the India-Australia series.

This year, few of the players, especially pacers, might take a break between the games if they feel that they need rest.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the vice-captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, also talked about it and had hinted that the pacers might take rest in the later stage of the league.

Last year, reports had emerged that Kohli wanted pacers Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah to miss the league.

The suggestion was, at last, not accepted as in no case any franchise would have liked to miss out on services of its top player.

Rohit Sharma was also against the idea, the report had suggested then.

But, the talk to manage workload has been in the air since then and the question has emerged a number of times now.

Many of the players, including Kohli, has been given extra rest during the past one year and it’s time for them to keep a check on their fitness in IPL.

The 12th edition of the T20 league starts on March 23 with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The full schedule of the league s yet to be announced.
