IPL 2019: Shakib Al Hasan Keen to Make the Opportunities Count Ahead of the World Cup
Sunrisers Hyderabad suffered a thumping six-wicket loss to Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium after a good run in the last few matches. Shakib Al Hasan sneaked in a game in place of Kane Williamson who was back home due to personal reasons. Skipping the Bangladesh World Cup to get some match practice, Shakib is keen to make the opportunities count ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019.
Hyderabad’s overseas quota has been filled by Jonny Bairstow, David Warner, and skipper Kane Williamson at the top-order while Rashid Khan donned the spinners hat. With Bairstow and Warner in blistering form, there was no way Shakib Al Hasan could get an opportunity. Warner and Bairstow have been the most lethal opening pair in this IPL adding four 100+ stands and a few 50+ partnerships. And now with Jonny Bairstow leaving to join the England camp, Shakib might get some match time ahead of the World Cup.
Shakib Al Hasan admitted that he was aware of the situations and knew that he won’t get many chances with Bairstow and Warner doing the bulk of the scoring. However, he has put in the extra yard and worked hard and is keen to make the upcoming opportunities count.
“As a professional, there is no mental pressure, we know our job. The way our overseas players were playing, they couldn’t pick me. There was no opportunity. I knew that was going to happen as we have David Warner and Bairstow scoring 70 per cent runs.
“Kane is the captain and Rashid [Khan] is Rashid. It is hard to get a chance. I needed to ensure that I work hard and when my opportunities come, I can contribute,” he added.
Need to have a different plan: Shakib
With Jonny Bairstow leaving for England, Shakib Al Hasan feels they need to have a different game plan in place. The Bangladesh skipper also added that management will take a call considering the opponent and the conditions. However, Shakib feels it will not be a big problem as they have a strong squad in place.
“I think with Jonny leaving tomorrow, we need to have a different plan. The team management will look at the opposition and conditions and then, decide the best. Since we have such a strong squad, they can pick six to seven combinations,” Shakib concluded.
