Delhi Capitals, previously known as Delhi Daredevils have made a handful of changes ahead of the new season of Indian Premier League (IPL) in a bid to change their fortune. Besides, they have also made changes in the support staffs and added former India skipper Sourav Ganguly as the advisor of the side for IPL 2019.
The Delhi-based franchise finished in the last spot with only five wins in the last season of the league. However, they will be desperate to lift their maiden trophy, and the players looked confident to go all the way. They have some excellent Indian batsmen backed by quality bowlers in their ranks. The management will aim to find the right combination and start winning games from the beginning.
The side-led by Shreyas Iyer will start their campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 24 at the Wankhede Stadium.
Delhi Capitals players list features a formidable batting line-up well backed by some quality bowlers. Moreover, they have traded in local boy Shikhar Dhawan from Sunrisers Hyderabad to add flavour at the top-order. In return, they have given Vijay Shankar, Shahbaz Nadeem, and Abhishek Sharma to the Sunrisers. As a result, the top-order will have the experience of Dhawan along with youngster Prithvi Shaw which makes it look deadly. Besides, the left hand-right hand combination will make it tough for the new ball bowlers.
Delhi Capitals with face problems once the overseas pacer leaves the IPL 2019 to join their respective national side in a bid to prepare for the ICC World Cup. They lack quality Indian pacer in their bench strength apart from Ishant and Avesh Khan – who impressed in the last edition, to take up the role. The lack of quality fast bowlers can prove to be a weakness in these long tournaments.
Besides, the middle-order doesn’t boast heavy T20 credentials. Vihari despite cementing the Test berth is a rare commodity in the shortest format of the game. They don’t have too many options in the middle-order to back up if Vihari fails to perform.
Other than this, Delhi Capitals don’t have too many weakness on paper ahead of the start of the season.
The upcoming 14 games will be a perfect chance for someone like Rishabh Pant to strengthen his national selection ahead of the World Cup. Although Virat Kohli said IPL performances will have no bearing on World Cup selection; Pant will look to make the most of it. Prithvi Shaw, who has already attained fame, will seem to present his limited overs credibility to present his case in front of the national selector.
On the other hand, Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane who will play his second season in the Delhi outfit will be desperate to learn a trick or so from the legends of the game. He will work with Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly from close quarters and will try to pick the batsmen minds. It will also be a perfect platform for Windies rookie Shrefane Rutherford – who impressed during Global T20 Canada, to showcase his talent at a big stage.
Delhi Capitals have lost close games which have hurt them badly in the past 11 seasons. They need to learn from their past mistakes to end their barren run in the IPL. Fielding has also been an issue with this team, and as a result, they have roped former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif as the fielding coach. Kaif’s main aim will be to make Delhi Capitals a better fielding side.
Overall, the squad looks balanced and has a perfect blend of experience with youth. Moreover, if they can keep the injuries away, the Capitals can lift their maiden title this time.
Predicted XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Colin Ingram, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Sherfane Rutherford, Axar Patel, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma
