Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) opened their account in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) with an eight-wicket win over Mumbai Indians at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Following their victory, star batsman Mayank Agarwal noted this victory would give the batsmen a lot of confidence in the matches to come.
Chasing 176 runs, KL Rahul shared two crucial partnerships to seal the deal for the home side. He added 53 runs for the first wicket with Chris Gayle – the latter being the attacker. Rahul, who failed in the last two games was happy to play the waiting game while Gayle went hard at the bowlers. He then shared another 64-run stand with Mayank Agarwal to close in on the target. KL Rahul played a different game taking his time to settle before going after the bowlers. Mayank; however, said that Mumbai Indians didn’t give him any loose deliveries to play his shots.
“To be honest, they bowled well, they didn’t give him too many loose balls and bowled tight to him. It was not easy for him to go out there and get runs, so once we realised that, we rallied around. That’s what a good team does and we are very happy that we could do it as a side,” Agarwal said addressing a post-match press conference.
Wanted to play good cricketing shots
Mayank Agarwal who recently made his Test debut against Australia has looked in excellent touch in the opening two games. He has timed the ball well, and has looked to play textbook shots. Speaking about his own games, Mayank said that he had the same thing in mind. He also added that they thought of sharing a 50-60 run partnership to put the opposition in pressure.
“Thought process was to actually play good cricketing strokes. The wicket was good, the ball was coming on to the bat. We had got a 50-run partnership. “The other thought was as soon as I went in, I spoke to Rahul and he said if we get another 50-60 run partnership, we can definitely put them under the pump because we will have a lot of wickets in hand. And on a good wicket we could definitely put pressure on them,” Mayank added.
In conclusion, Mayank Agarwal said that the eight-wicket win would give them confidence in the next matches to come. Kings XI Punjab next faces Delhi Capitals on April 1 at their own home turf in Mohali.
