IPL 2019: Two Players Who Can Replace Virat Kohli as the Skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore
Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have once again started the tournament in the worst possible note. They have lost three games on a trot and finds themselves in the last position. Amidst all, there have been calls urging skipper Virat Kohli to step down from captaincy owing to poor performance.
Meanwhile, Bangalore is one of the few franchises who are yet to lift the coveted trophy. Kohli ahead of the season mentioned that they will put in all their effort to win the title this time around. However, they have made a horrible start and will have to turn things soon in their favour. But a certain section of the Royal Challengers Bangalore fans have raised for the sacking of Virat Kohli from the leadership position.
Kohli has had a string of poor performances as the leader since he took over the reins in 2013. In the 99 matches, he has captained RCB, Kohli has won 44 games while 50 others ended on a losing note. His failure with the team has also affected his batting as the talismanic run-scorer is yet to showcase his talent in this tournament. The fans will not want their favourite son to lose momentum ahead of the ICC World Cup. In stark contrast, Virat Kohli’s record as an Indian skipper is staggering and grabs attention.
While we take a look at the two possible replacement of Virat Kohli as the skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore, the incumbent skipper will be desperate to make a turnaround in his 100th match as RCB skipper.
AB de VILLIERS
The first name that comes to every cricket fanatics name is AB de Villiers. The former Proteas cricketer has often stepped in place of Virat Kohli when he has gone out of the field in between overs. However, de Villiers is yet to lead a full match in the Indian Premier League.
But the talismanic cricketer has led his country and two T20 franchises; although they are not impressive. In 18 T20I games, de Villiers has led his country, he has won eight of them while finishing on the losing side on nine occasions. Moreover, his records for the franchise teams – Lahore Qalandars and Tshwane Spartans is also not great. For Lahore, he has captained three matches losing two of them and for the Spartans de Villiers has managed to win only four games out of ten.
Despite that, AB de Villiers has the pedigree to lead the side and can be a perfect replacement for Virat Kohli.
The Australian all-rounder is currently rated as one of the best in business. Although this his first year in Royal Challengers Bangalore, Marcus Stoinis has substantial experience behind his back. He has played 19 T20Is for Australia and is a crucial figure in their line-up. He has plied his trade for Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League.
Stoinis belongs to that rare breed of cricketers who can bat anywhere in the batting order, bowl useful overs, both at the start and the end of a T20 innings and is a gun fielder. It is these qualities that prompted the Royal Challengers into entering a trade with the Kings XI Punjab ahead of the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League. He was a part of Punjab set up for three seasons from 2016; however, his first franchise was Delhi Daredevil, now known as Delhi Capitals.
The all-rounder has the capability to lead the team and bring out the best out of his teammates. Although he has not led any team in this format, RCB will hope him to deliver if bestowed with the responsibility.
