IPL 2019: Three Success Mantras For Delhi Capitals in This Season
After their win against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals became the second team to enter the playoffs. Delhi has come with collective team performance and they have borne fruits for the game. DC outdid RCB by just 16 runs.
It was in 2012 when the Capitals had last qualified for the playoffs. It has been seven years since then. The formerly known Delhi Daredevils team had come up with dismal performances, mostly ending up at the bottom of the table. They received fierce criticism for their string of poor performance in the last six years. It was a heartbreaking experience for not the franchise and the players but also for their fans.
Constantly called as the ‘Underdogs’ for their performance through the six IPL seasons, it wasn’t much expected from them for the IPL season 12 as well.
However, the owners (newly added JSW sports and GMR group) expected changes and renamed the franchise as ‘Delhi Capitals’ to give the team a fresh start. In the process of renovating, the team management reclaimed around 14 of their squad players. They also strategically claimed their former player in the earlier seasons, Shikhar Dhawan to strengthen their top batting order.
With all the new things happening this year, the franchise went to rope in India’s most successful captain Sourav Ganguly as an official advisor. The team has stuck to its famous quote, “This Is New Delhi” and has played on the field with immense confidence oozing out of them.
That being said, let’s have a look at the review of the success mantra of this reincarnated team.
Potent Batting Order:
It all starts with the beginning. The runs scored by the openers build a pace for the team to carry it forward. The performance of the top order is extremely vital for the team to create the bridging difference between them and their opponents. With the addition of Shikhar Dhawan to their squad, DC had very strong opening batsmen.
Furthermore, they have a quality opener in the form of Prithvi Shaw, they also have their skipper Shreyas Iyer at number 3 who is then followed by a promising young talent Rishabh Pant. They have almost every time ensured the team got off to a great start.
Up until now, the team had scored a total of 1987 runs out of which 75% of the teams’ runs(1457 runs) with 11 half centuries were scored by these four batsmen.
With the way the top batting order batsmen have performed their duty, it has been undoubtedly phenomenal. They became the biggest strength of the Delhi Capitals and if continued their good work, the team might end up lifting their first trophy this season.
Quality bowling by Kagiso Rabada:
Whether it be Glenn McGrath, or Ajit Agarkar or the Indian fast bowling sensation Zaheer Khan, these big bowlers were not able to do the job for Delhi. These players used to be the cricketing sensation on the field and yet, it was the young South African pacer who stole the limelight in this season with his performance.
Kagiso Rabada became one of the most cherished bowlers of the IPL season. However, the 23-year-old pacer was not this successful when he first joined the franchise in 2017. In six games that he had played in 2017 IPL season, he could pick only six wickets while in the 11th IPL season he could not participate due to his lower back injury.
However, this year Rabada seems to be soaring off with his performances. It is like he has been making up for his past performances during the earlier years. He brutalised the teams with not just his pace but also with his perfect yorkers. He worked his way out with yorkers in situations when pacers avoid going for them.
With his ability to reverse swing the ball, old or new, against the direction of the seam the young tearaway pacer proudly sits at the throne of the Purple Cap with 25 wickets. However, Rabada is now ruled out which is a big blow for the Delhi Capitals.
The Fusion of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly:
Being the head coach of India Team A and U-19, the former DC coach Rahul Dravid had to part his ways with the franchise in 2017. Then to take care of the seemingly sinking ship the two time ICC World Cup winner, Ricky Ponting was appointed as the responsible head coach of the team.
The former Australian skipper had been a successful experience as a coach for two years for Mumbai Indians (2015 IPL winner). And then this year they decide to include another world champion and former skipper of India national team, Sourav Ganguly to their team.
Like every year, the team had excellent players added to their squad. But this is not enough for a team to ace in the game. In the earlier years, the team lacked to turn their players potential into winning performance. This seemed to change this year with the duo handling the team together.
However, the once deemed aggressive rivals in international games have handled the team very well. They have shared their experience, knowledge and wisdom with the players and have backed them up when they needed it the most. This fusion of the two rivals has certainly brought the best out of the players. Thus, leading the team to its sheer peak and they could win the very first title.
