Maiden IPL stint for Kings XI Punjab bowler Varun Chakravarthy came to a premature end after he failed to recover from the injuries which he sustained during the practice sessions for the Kings XI Punjab. Varun Chakravarthy who is known as a mystery spinner has played just a solitary match for Kings XI Punjab this season.
The match came against the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was smashed for 24 runs in his first over as Sunil Narine completely destroyed him. However, he came back brilliantly in the next 2 overs conceding just 11 runs and bagging a good wicket.
It was during Kings XI Punjab’s visit to Chennai in April when he got injured in April which made him miss the next two weeks of the tournament. Kings XI Punjab was optimistic of the fact that the mystery spinner will recover for the final phase of the tournament. However, the failure to regain full fitness ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.
“While the team were hopeful that Chakravarthy would return for the final few games of the campaign, his recovery, however, hasn’t been sufficient. The 27-year-old will return home as a result. KXIP wishes him a speedy recovery and the very best for the rest of the year,” KXIP said in a media release on Wednesday.
The mystery spinner from Tamil Nadu, Varun Chakravarthy came into the limelight during the Tamil Nadu Premier League and built a great reputation for him as a mystery spinner. A lot was expected from him and hence he was picked by the Kings XI Punjab for a whopping INR 8.4 crores to bag his services in the IPL Auctions last year in December.
Meanwhile coming back to Kings XI Punjab, they are currently at the 7th position in the points table and need to win their remaining two games to harbour hopes of going through to the playoffs. However, two victories won’t guarantee a place in the playoffs. They will need help from other teams to proceed.
