IPL 2019: We were Exposed for the First Time in the Tournament Says Head Coach Stephen Fleming
Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming stated that it was for the first time in the ongoing season of Vivo IPL 12 that CSK were exposed after they suffered a 6 wickets defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad yesterday. In the absence of MS Dhoni, it was Suresh Raina who led the side in his absence and failed to impress with his captaincy skills.
Batting first after winning the toss, Chennai Super Kings got off to a pretty steady start courtesy opening duo of Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis. After a couple of tidy overs each by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed, Watson and du Plessis started going after the bowlers. They struck some exceptional shots and shared a stand of 79 runs within 10 overs.
However from there on it was a sensational comeback by the SRH bowlers as they restricted them to 132/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Rashid Khan was the pick of the bowlers yet again for SRH as he finished with a couple of wickets for just 17 runs. Chasing a modest target, SRH was quite comfortable in the run chase.
Openers David Warner and Jonny Bairstow got them off to a flying start. Warner struck a 24 balls half-century and shared a 66 runs stand with Bairstow. After Warner’s expulsion, the onus was on Bairstow to finish the job for his team. He remained at the crease till the end to ensure Hyderabad won the match by 6 wickets and with 19 deliveries left.
Meanwhile, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said that they don’t over analyse their defeats and will look to come back stronger against a struggling Royal Challengers Bangalore. Stephen Fleming stressed on the areas which they need to improve in the next few matches.
“This is the first time in a while we were exposed like that and will be interesting to see how the players respond.” He further stated, “We don’t over-analyse our defeats. We identify the areas to work on and we work on those. You have to have some kind of resilience. We played eight and won seven and the ninth one we got to keep motivated.”
Meanwhile, Fleming further added that there is no place for complacency for the players despite already winning 7 from 9 matches. He added that CSK will look into the areas where they can improve. He also added that in T20 cricket one can expect to lose a game here and there after enjoying such a dominant run in the tournament.
Except for us focusing more on the things we should have done better. I don’t know if there is complacency due to the good run but you have to expect to lose games every now and then,” he said. Need to make sure that in the next game against RCB we are better. You can’t assume you’re in the semi-finals. It doesn’t matter how teams are playing because each game is tough. That’s a motto we have had for a long time,” he added.
While MS Dhoni who had to miss the last game owing to a back stiffness might be back for the next game against Bangalore. Stand in skipper Suresh Raina also stated that it was just a precautionary measure after he sustained the injury.
He (Dhoni) was stiff after the game in Kolkata. So it’s mostly a precaution and it’s also the part of the season where we have to careful so that he gets through the season in good shape. Every ground he goes to people want to see him play, but we have to make big calls,” Fleming said.
