The presence of number of openers in the side could force the franchise to release him. Lewis joined the franchise at a high price of Rs 3.8 Crores ahead of IPL 2018. He got to play only three matches this year. The reason behind his limited appearances was the promotion for Rohit Sharma – who move up the order.

It is unlikely that Mumbai Indians’ team management would now allow Rohit to move back in the middle-order. He will continue to open with Quinton de Kock. MI have likes of Aditya Tare, Siddhesh Lad and SuryaKumar Yadav as backup openers.
