Chennai Super Kings are set to play Rajasthan Royals on 22nd of September in their second match of the IPL, at the Sharjah International Stadium. CSK started their IPL 2020 campaign by winning their first match against MI by five wickets. CSK in this campaign are competing without their veteran players, Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina. They have both withdrawn from the tournament citing personal reasons.
South African pacer Lungi Ngidi put on a good show in the IPL opener going home with 3 wickets. CSK speedster Deepak Chahar who had just returned a few days back after being treated for COVID-19 also bagged two wickets. Ravindra Jadeja got two wickets to his name, while Piyush Chawla and Sam Curran both got one wicket each.
The CSK bowling was effective to only allow Mumbai Indians to set a target of 163, which they chased with efforts from Ambati Rayudu (71 runs) and Faf Du Plessis (58 runs).
Chennai Super Kings predicted XI vs RR
Openers: Shane Watson and Murali Vijay
At the opening spot, CSK will again field Australian veteran batsman Shane Watson and Murali Vijay. The duo looked not in their best as they succumbed early to the Mumbai Bowling attack in the last match.
However, this partnership might not be seen for long in the tournament if they don’t start performing with Chennai having the option of bringing in Ruturaj Gaikwad soon in the team.
Middle Order: Faf du Plessis, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni
The CSK middle order performed astonishingly well to lead Chennai to a victory against MI. Earlier, with the withdrawal of Suresh Raina from the tournament — CSK were in a worry with whom to replace him at number three spot, but du Plessis looks to have adjusted well in the spot. He scored 58 off 41 balls in the last match and will retain his spot in the starting lineup in the upcoming match against RR.
Ambati Rayudu was the best performer in the CSK batting order in the last match scoring 71 runs off 48 bowls in their chase.
He will again be seen at the same two-down spot in the Chennai Super Kings lineup. MS Dhoni who came back on the pitch after a long span of 14 months has still not had the chance to show his batting. He only played two balls and scored none in the last match, staying unbeaten.
All-rounders: Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran
Kedar Jadhav was unused in the last match with both bat and bowl but will still retain his place in the side. Ravindra Jadeja was successful in picking up 2 important wickets for the team. Sam Curran was very impressed with both the bat and bowl. It would be hard for CSK to choose between him and Dwayne Bravo when he is deemed fit.
Bowlers: Lungi Ngidi, Piyush Chawla, Deepak Chahar
Chennai Super Kings have the options to start with Imran Tahir but with Ngidi’s three-wicket haul in the last match, it would be hard to replace him in the team. Piyush Chawla with his cunning spin bowling tips to start over Shardul Thakur yet again. Deepak Chahar will also make the cut for a starting place.
