MS Dhoni, as usual, took some bold and unpredictable decision which fall in favour of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the opening match against Mumbai Indians (MI). After 437 days, Dhoni was back in the ground and captaining CSK but nothing changed. His astute captaincy leads CSK to victory in the season opener against Mumbai Indians by five wickets.
After the end of the match, MS Dhoni stated that bowlers had struggled early on the day to find the right length. But he believes that there other things to take positive out of the victory. He also stated that the dew assisted them to get across the line.
“It took us time for the bowlers to find the right length on this pitch. Plenty of positives but still plenty of areas for us to improve. In the second half, there is a bit of movement till the dew sets in. If you don’t lose wickets early, you have the upper hand. These are the learnings.
MS Dhoni labelled Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis partnership as wonderful. As most of the players in the CSK squad are retired or not regular in an international cricketer, Dhoni felt grateful that no one was injured. He believes that the experience helped him to get the lead against Mumbai Indians.
The wicketkeeper-batsman also added that to win the games, the playing XI should have a mixture of experienced and youngsters.
“Rayudu had a wonderful partnership with Faf. Most of us are retired so luckily no injuries as well. The experience pays off, everyone talks about it. You get it only after you play a lot of games. 300 ODIs is a dream for anybody to play and when you put an XI on the field, you need a good mix of youngsters and experienced players. You need the experienced players to guide the youngsters on and off the field. The young players get 60-70 days with the seniors in the IPL.
MS Dhoni on sending Sam Curran ahead of him:
One of the noteworthy decisions of MS Dhoni in the season opener match was sending Sam Curran ahead of him in the batting line up. The skipper revealed that they had preplanned to send them in up order to accelerate the innings with big hits. And Curran did the same job. He hit two gigantic sixes and one boundary in his 18 runs off 6 balls. His short but fiery cameo helped CSK to put pressure on MI.
“One thing we haven’t done is giving a chance to Jadeja and Curran to come up the order and express themselves which is what we did today. It was a psychological thing of saying that okay, we have batsmen down, so we’ll send one or two of them up to hit a few,” MS Dhoni said.
Meanwhile, MS Dhoni faced the only ball and scored zero runs in CSK’s unbelievable victory.
