Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir feels it might be hard for MS Dhoni to create impact with the bat immediately after being away from the game for a year now. Dhoni recently announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15 leaving the whole cricketing world shocked. He was last seen on the field last year in the ODI World Cup where Team India was knocked out by New Zealand.
Team veteran Suresh Raina had left the camp from UAE citing personal reasons which had affected the CSK lineup. Raina is the highest run-scorer for CSK and second highest in the entire IPL. IPL 2020 is being played in the UAE due to the mammoth numbers of coronavirus cases in India.
Gautam Gambhir wants MS Dhoni to bat at a higher position:
MS Dhoni has been fantastic whenever he has batted up the line. He had eventually shifted to the lower down the order acting as a finisher, but with the absence of Suresh Raina in the team, Gambhir wants him to come at number one or the number second spot.
Gambhir has also stated it might be difficult for MSD — to create an impact with the bat immediately after being away from the game for a year now.
“Firstly, every captain’s role is important for their franchise. But MS Dhoni’s becomes more important because they don’t have Suresh Raina and Harbhajan Singh, two players from their playing XI who had experience.
“I would want to see at what number MS Dhoni bats because the better you bat, the better decisions you can take as a captain. So his form is going to be very important and I will want to see him start at No.3 or No.4 so that he can get his form,” Gautam Gambhir said.
“He has not played cricket at all for the last one year, so to suddenly come to a tournament like the IPL and start scoring runs and make an impact sometimes becomes difficult. So the higher he bats, it would become easier.”
MS Dhoni as No. 3 batsman:
MS Dhoni initially used to bat at number three for Indian but then he transitioned his role to a finisher coming at number five. Moreover, he has a better record at number three. In 17 ODIs, he has scored 993 runs at an average of 82.75.
MS Dhoni will once again lead the CSK side in the IPL 2020. CSK will face MI in the IPL opener on 19th September. The IPL 2020 will be played between September 19 and November 10. The matches will be played in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah respectively.
