Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming opines that the 10 wicket wins can cover a lot of problems in the team but they are still far from being at their best in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

CSK bounced back stronger in their last match against Kings XI Punjab after facing three defeats in a row. Shane Watson, who had struggled in past matches, starred in the victory against KXIP. He scored unbeaten 83 off 53 balls and was adjudged with Man of the Match. The return of Watson is a big boost for CSK.

Shane Watson had a poor outing before hitting his first IPL 2020 half-century which had raised eyebrow over his place in the playing XI. But CSK trusted the player which reaped result as Watson cam good in the last match.

On backing the players, Stephen Fleming said that CSK’s “reticent” approach to change when faced with poor results has been the key to its success over the years.

“I think it helps as players know they get more opportunities…We are reticent to changing the team other than realizing the areas that we are not happy with. Also, you are not sure if that change will help or not,” Fleming said in his post-match online comments.

Fleming added that they trust players ability and back them as long and even longer than possible.

“We try and improve and if players are doing the right thing we will back them as long and even longer than possible,” CSK’s long-serving coach echoed.

Talking about Shane Watson’s performance, Stephen Fleming said that the veteran was already doing good in nets but he just needed a few more chances to replicate that in the field.

“That’s the strength of an experienced player. If Shane had been struggling in the nets, then it would have been a concern but he was solid.

“It was a matter of time, little bit of fortune and some good positive thoughts from him. Shane, if he gets on a roll, will be very important to us,” he added.

Stephen Flemings, who is serving as CSK’s head coach since 2009, stated that the last performance might have covered the loopholes in the team but they are still far from where they want to reach in the tournament.

“Performances like that covers up a lot of things but we are by no means where we want to be,” he said.

“Faf (Du Plessis) has been in great form but if Watto finds some form, it makes us a lot more competitive,” the coach said.

Chennai Super Kings have raised to six position in the points table of the IPL 2020. Their next competition is against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Wednesday.
