Washington Sundar, who starred in Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) emphatic victory against Kolkata Knight Riders, has stated that his key to success this IPL season has been keeping things simple and not attempting to do too much.
The spin bowling allrounder has been the vital cog for the team in powerplays and middle-overs. In Sharjah, he bowled tight spells against KKR while picked two wickets, including the prized wicket of Eoin Morgan. He conceded only 20 runs in his four-over quotas. So far, his contribution has been most impactful in RCB’s five out of seven victories.
At the post-match press conference, Washington Sundar revealed that he is getting the reward of keeping things simple and sticking to the basics. The spinner didn’t even try to change his game plan for Sharjah even though the batters can be ruthless because of short boundaries.
“I just want to keep things simple and hit the hard length over and again. That’s something which has been working for me in this particular season,” Washington Sundar said.
“I didn’t want to try too many things just because you’re playing in Sharjah and a very important win for us.”
Washington Sundar on his bowling partnership with Chahal:
Washington Sundar, along with RCB’s veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, rocked with ball against KKR. Their combined figures were 8 overs, 32 runs and 3 wickets. Sundar also expressed that he was happy to be a good bowling partner with Chahal.
“We did feel that we will get a lot of persistence for both spinners, at least in the middle phase of the tournament, and I’m very glad to bowl well in tandem with him,” he said.
Further, Sundar gave away full credit to AB de Villers’ unbeaten 73 runs knock to seal the win for Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“Before the game started, we did feel that it might slow down as the game progresses. It did slow down a bit… But the way AB batted, literally made a difference. We did feel that 160 would be a very good score but the way he batted, any ground wouldn’t have made a difference,” Sundar said.
Washington Sundar admitted that 82 runs win against KKR would surely boost the confidence in RCB. But he hopes that his side remains consistent as the tournament moves on.
“The fact that we are playing six bowlers today was very good and we clearly would have seen the result also, winning by 82 runs against a team like KKR. It does boost a lot of confidence in our team. The composition looks very good and still a lot more games to come and hopefully, we could go really deep into the tournament,” Sundar added.
Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore are at the number three position in the points table with 10 points just behind Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.
