Former England skipper Michael Vaughan hailed Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni as the best captain in T20 cricket history after the four-time champions recorded the 10th final in the cash-rich league after a thumping win over Gujarat Titans in Chepauk. The 41-year-old has won four IPL titles for the Chennai Super Kings.
Chennai Super Kings is the second most successful team in the history of the Indian Premier League with four titles in the cash-rich league next to the five-time champions Mumbai Indians and has been the most consistent team in the IPL making it into the playoffs 12 times.
Speaking on the Cricbuzz, Michael Vaughan lauded the CSK skipper MS Dhoni and Stephen Fleming for creating a good atmosphere in the dressing room and reckons that the team culture was important as the players trust the team management as they would get ample opportunities to showcase their skill in the IPL.
“MS Dhoni has run this operation with Stephen Fleming from day dot. One or two of the simple procedures that they go through. They create a strong atmosphere and they are very consistent.
“We don’t even talk about the team, because we know that the team is going to be the same as the last one. With that, you create a culture of players knowing that once they get the opportunity in the side, you’re pretty much going to stay in the side. The captain and the coach back you. They have a very family atmosphere,” Michael Vaughan said.
MS Dhoni has been exceptional with the bat for CSK with an average of 51.5 and a strike rate of 190.74. The four-time champions made it into the record 10th final in the cash-rich league with a thumping win over Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.
I Don’t Think There Has Been Better Captain Than MS Dhoni Ever In T20 Cricket – Michael Vaughan
Michael Vaughan believes that most of the work and tactics is done behind the scenes as MS Dhoni is always open to having a conversation with youngsters and that show the captaincy skills of the former Indian skipper and said that they are no better captain than MS Dhoni in T20 cricket at the moment and lauded him for his utilising of spin bowlers in different conditions.
“Most of the captaincy, you don’t see. The external captaincy you can see on the pitch with tactical moves. The best work is done behind the scenes.”
“I always look at any captain who is very good is usually the one who manages spinners. Most captains can manage pacers, but it is how you manage spinners. It is when you bowl them, how you set the field, when you go aggressive, when you spread the field. I don’t think there has been a better captain than MS Dhoni ever in T20 cricket across the board. You can argue MS Dhoni’s captaincy of spin is best across all formats,” Michael Vaughan added
MS Dhoni will look to equal the record of being the most successful team in the Indian Premier League alongside Mumbai Indians with five IPL titles as they will take on one of Gujarat Titans, Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians in the finals of IPL 2023 Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.
