Indian Cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar feels that Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma should take a break away from the game to keep him fit for the all-important World Test Championship final against Australia in the Oval. The 36-year-old has struggled to get going in this edition of the Indian Premier League.
Sunil Gavaskar said that Rohit looks like he is preoccupied with something and reckons that he may have a lot of thoughts about the World Test Championship final in a month. He asserted that he could need a little break at this stage of IPL and can make it for the last three to four games for the five-time champions.
“I would say that Rohit should maybe take a break for the time being, and keep himself fit for the World Test Championship Final. He can come back again for the last few matches, but right now, [he should] take a little bit of a breather himself,” Sunil Gavaskar said in Star Sports.
Besides, the ICC World Test Championship final will be the second major assignment for Rohit Sharma as the Indian skipper next to the T20 World Cup in 2022, where they were defeated by reigning champions England in the semifinals. Rohit Sharma will look to end India’s ICC title drought In WTC Final and ODI World Cup later this year.
Meanwhile, most of the Indian team players will leave for London for the WTC final immediately after the league stage of the IPL which ends on May 21 and will be joined by the other players as part of the playoffs after the completion of the IPL 2023 Finals.
MS Dhoni Could Take Over The Coaching Role In The Indian Team – Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar urged the Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni to take up the coaching role of the Indian team maybe a little later after he retires from cricket and believes that every player wants a few cooling-off periods before taking any role in Indian Cricket.
“MS Dhoni could take over the coaching role (in the Indian team) a little bit later. I think that is how it should be. I do believe that you need a little bit of cooling off period before you take any assignment with the team (after retiring as a player),” Sunil Gavaskar added.
Earlier in the 2021 T20 World Cup, MS Dhoni served as a mentor in the Indian team and it will interesting to see, whether he takes the opportunity to guide the Indian team in the future.
