Cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull triggered the strike rate and power-hitting concern of Gujarat Titans opener Shubman Gill as he slowed down in the death overs against Lucknow Super Giants in the Narendra Modi Stadium. The 23-year-old played a match-winning knock of 94 runs from 51 balls against the Krunal Pandya-led side.
Shubman Gill has been in fantastic form in this edition of IPL 2023 and has been the leading Gujarat Titans in run scoring with 469 runs at an average of 46.90 and a 143.32 strike rate.
Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull feels the Shubman Gill got tired at the end of the innings, as he could not hit boundaries in the death overs, and said that the team could have retired him out after his quickfire knock as the conditions were not favourable for batting in the scorching heat.
“Shubman was getting tired. He wasn’t able to hit the boundaries as much as he could. And it can happen. Listen…it might be controversial, but I am waiting for the day when a bloke gets 75 or 80 off 45 balls and is cooked after the afternoon heat which is 45 degrees and hence quite can’t get there so he says ‘Okay Tewatia, you are out there.’ Retire him out,” Simon Doull said.
Earlier, The Indian opener recently agreed with KL Rahul that the strike rate is overrated since a hitter should be able to play under any circumstances. In the first three months of 2023, Gill has had a dream run, scoring hundreds in each of the game’s three formats. Shubman Gill, the Indian opener, had two hundred in his last four Test matches and will try to do well in the forthcoming games.
I Know People Will Still Say Hundred Is A Hundred – Simon Doull
Simon Doull said that milestones don’t matter in this format of the games as the players and teams should try to score more runs to post big totals and feel that if a player could not accelerate in the final stage of the innings he should be retired out if they are big hitters available in the side.
“I am saying time and time again, milestones don’t matter in this game. I know people will still say a hundred is a hundred. Yes, it is, but it’s a hundred if you win. If you lose, it means jack. I feel we’re just quite there when a guy says that he is tired and is not able to hit the boundaries. And if you have ammunition in the bank then why not use it,” Simon Doull added.
Earlier in the match against LSG, former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull slammed Virat Kohli for his slow knock as he took 10 balls to move from 42 to 50 runs with 10 wickets in his hands during their match with Lucknow Super Giants.
