Former England skipper Michael Vaughan feels that the slow start by Chennai Super Kings in the powerplay has caused them the match against Rajasthan Royals in Sawai Singh Stadium on Thursday. MS Dhoni-led side could not get going in the chase as they managed to score only 42 runs from the first six overs.
Chennai Super Kings’ approach in the powerplay was a cause of concern as they struggled against Rajasthan Royals bowlers in the chase, as their star performer Devon Conway got out for a struggling eight runs off 16 balls.
Cricket-turned-commentator Michael Vaughan credited Rajasthan Royals for being professional in the field as they came after back-to-back defeats in the league–and praised young Yashasvi Jaiswal for his attacking innings in the powerplay–and lauded them for being clinical in the field.
“It was needed on the back of two defeats. But they were very professional. Jaiswal got them on their way with the bat in the powerplay. And after losing two games, you just need to get the momentum going, and I think they did that. They were smart in the field,” Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.
With 203 runs to chase, Chennai Super Kings had a poor start to the innings as Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway struggled against the new-ball bowling of Rajasthan Royals.
Speaking on the chase, Michael Vaughan feels that CSK should have gone hard in the powerplay to keep up the powerplay even if they have two to three wickets in the chase.
“The powerplay from Chennai was a strange one because they only got 42 and lost the wicket of Conway. I wonder if they should have gone a bit hard in the first six. Even if they would have lost 2-3 wickets and scored 60, they would have been up with the run rate. The powerplay really cost CSK in the chase.”
Chennai Super Kings top-order batter failed collectively against the Sanju Samson-led side, as the four-times champions were 73-4 at the 10.3 overs, with their hard-hitters Shivam Dube and Moeen Ali accelerated in the middle over but could not ace down the chase for the MS Dhoni-led side as they fell short of 32 runs at the end of 20 overs.
Adam Zampa Was Excellent Coming Back Into The Side – Michael Vaughan
Michael Vaughan praised Australian leg spinner Adam Zampa for his excellent comeback into the side as he is exceptional against the four-time champions. Zampa was brilliant against Chennai Super Kings as he picked up three wickets conceding just 22 runs from his three overs in the match.
“Zampa was excellent coming back into the side. In the IPL, if you get an opportunity, you have to make it count, and he’s made RR’s life a little more difficult because when Trent Boult is fit, what are they going to do?” Michael Vaughan added.
It would be difficult for Rajasthan Royals management to fit Trent Boult into the playing 11 for the next game as Adam Zampa made it difficult for the team’s think tank. Sanju Samson-led side will take on five-time champions Mumbai Indians on April 30.
