Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody believes it important for Delhi Capitals think tank to take a tough call on certain players as they could not make an impact for the David Warner-led side in the 16th edition of Indian Premier League.
Tom Moody feels it is important to take some tough decisions in the forthcoming games, citing the poor form of star opener Prithvi Shaw, who struggled to get going on the league stage so far, and reckons that IPL 2023, might not be the breakout year for Mumbai batter.
“You’ve got to make a tough call on certain players that aren’t showing any light at the end of the tunnel. And on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far with Prithvi Shaw, it may well be that IPL 2023 may not be his year where he has the impact that we all hoped that he was going to have,” Tom Moody Said in Espncricinfo.
Prithvi Shaw had a disastrous start to the season for Delhi Capitals, as he scored only 34 runs from five matches with the highest score of 15 runs. He has been scoring runs consistently across formats in domestic cricket in all three formats but could not replicate his form in the cash-rich league.
The 57-year-old thinks that it is an important stage of the tournament, to take that hard decision as the franchise might lose their qualifiers spot if Delhi loses their next two games.
“It can just be, ‘Oh, we’ll give him a couple more games and see what happens’. Those couple of games go, and your chances as a franchise have gone. That’s why you’ve got to make that cold, hard decision at that point. This is crunch time.
Delhi Capitals is known for their aggressive approach in batting as they have three destructive batters as a part of their top order David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, and Rovman Powell are yet to find their form in the cash-rich league.
Mitchell Marsh Naturally An Enforcer, So That Would Complement David Warner – Tom Moody
Tom Moody believes that Michell Marsh should be the enforcer in the middle order, as he can bat alongside their skipper David Warner in the top of the order, and said that it would difficult for the bowlers to bowl for a left-right combination.
“He’s (Marsh) done that before recently and he’s done it successfully. He’s naturally an enforcer, so that would complement David Warner it would help him as well, You’ve got a left-right combination, you’ve got a 6ft4in and a 5ft8in batter, which is difficult to bowl to,” Tom Moody added.
Mitchell Marsh has been in superb form against India which helped Australia claim an ODI series victory against India. The Australian all-rounder was awarded the Player of the Series for scoring 194 runs in three matches with an impressive strike rate of 132.
