Soon after tasting success at the U-19 level, Pandey played the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians. However, he only played three games and managed three runs in IPL 2008.

Pandey was released by the franchise after a poor run in the inaugural season and he joined Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2009. He rose to fame after becoming the first Indian player to score a century in IPL. Pandey, who was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 11 crore in IPL 2018 auction, is one of the costliest picks in the history of IPL but hardly anyone remembers for being part of Mumbai Indians once.
