IPL 7: KXIP vs MI: Kings XI take on Mumbai Indians at Mohali

After securing their way to the playoffs with 9 victories in 11 matches, the league leader KXIP with holding 18 points, are going to face the defending champion Mumbai Indians, who are struggling at the 2nd last spot on the league table with 8 points from 11 matches. So, this match has got diminished importance judging by the league table, though KXIP will fight their best to retain their position in the top two of the league table.
This Year, throughout the whole tournament KXIP showed some outstanding performance and they are also one of the strong contenders for the title. They started this season with an excellent win over CSK by 6 wickets. Their batting line up is empowered by the lights of Glenn Maxwell and David Miller. Maxwell is presently the Orange Cap holder with 531 runs. Their debatable retention, Manan Vohra is also coming handy for them and played blistering knocks in each of the matches he played. Also, bowling attack of KXIP is also very good, some uncapped players have performed outstandingly in this IPL. Of them, Sandeep Sharma and Aksar Patel have shown majestic performances, they have bagged 17 and 8 wickets this year respectively. Rishi Dhawan has also made some all-round impact in the team. Their key player and power hitter Glenn Maxwell is in excellent form in this year and is playing with acute consistency. David Miller is also playing well regularly. Virendra Sehwag has also supported their batting strength in top order and their skipper George Bailey, occasionally shows some good batting performance and played a match winning cameo for them against the Sunrisers. The bowling attack, led by Mitchell Johnson, Lakshmipathy Balaji has strengthened their bowling. They are playing as a team this whole season, not as a one man based team and the combined effort of the players has taken them to this level.
On the other hand, if we see the team of Mumbai Indians then this year has not been a good season for them, consecutive losses in matches have thrown them out of the title race they are now practically out of the race for the playoffs. They started this season with a loss against KKR by 41 runs. They are the defending champions this year and it is the first time they are playing without Sachin Tendulkar – Their former captain. They have played 10 games and are yet to find their best 11. Their batting looked below standard throughout the tournament, except their performance in their last match when they outplayed RR by some brilliant display of batting. After the inclusion of Lendl Simmons, they have found some sorts of stability in their batting, especially in the opening. He has been in form and played some beautiful knocks. Ambati Rayudu has also been in some sort of consistency, but failed to play a match-winning innings for his team. Rohit Sharma looks to be in the form of late, which will be a bonus for them in tomorrow’s game. His innings of 40 runs off 19 balls in the last match against RR was surely a brilliant one. Keiron Pollard has been lacking form throughout the tournament with the bat and has managed to play only a single blistering knock this year. Corey Anderson has also not been able to put up a stand up performance either with the bat and the ball. Their bowling attack has also seemed to be out of touch. Harbhajan Singh is the only player who bowled consistently well throughout the tournament for them. Also, Lasith Malinga’s absence will surely hurt them today as he was one of the pillars in their bowling attack. One of their spinning strengths, Pragyan Ojha struggled with his line and length throughout the tournament. But their performance with the ball against the RR was incredibly good. They won their last match against RR, and hoping to win against KXIP in tomorrow’s match.

If we see the statistics, these two teams faced 13 head-to-head matches in IPL from 2008, and from that 13 matches KXIP have won in 7 matches and MI in 6 matches. This year in the first match which was held in Wankhede Stadium, MI won against KXIP by 5 wickets. The only two matches that KXIP lost in this season, this match was one of them.
