ToggleSri Lankan pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera is ruled out for at least first three weeks of Indian Premier League (IPL). The 26-year-old bowler is currently suffering from back issues and has remained in Colombo.
He has not joined the Rajasthan Royals squad and has stayed back to undergo furthermore tests. The medical tests will give the approximation on the level of back problem Chameera is struggling at the moment.
It will also determine the length of layoff and recovery time. Sri Lanka’s Chief Selector Graeme Labrooy has confirmed the news.
“He has had some back stiffness, so we expect it to be three more weeks at least before he can return to bowling,” Labrooy told ESPNcricinfo.
“We’ll reassess after that and see where he is,” he added.
Royals had bought Chameera for ₹ 50 Lakh in the auction. However, his unavailability could hurt the team even more.
Already Jofra Archer remains unfit, while Ben Laughlin and Ben Stokes are the only fit overseas quick for the club.
However, this is not the first time he suffered a major injury. But the positive news is that Chameera did not face a stress fracture, which has kept him out of action for several months in 2016.
Indian Premier League Plagued With Injuries:
Dushmantha Chameera is the latest to suffer a setback with an injury. However, the 11th edition of IPL had already seen plenty of injuries.
Aussie quick Mitchell Start was ruled out of IPL before the start of the season. Meanwhile, South African pace bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out just days ahead of new season.
On the first day of IPL, Chennai Super Kings batsman Kedar Jadhav had suffered from a hamstring injury. A grade two hamstring tear meant he was ruled out of IPL 2018.
Earlier on Tuesday, Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed pace bowler Pat Cummins will also miss IPL 2018 due to a back problem.
