Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq reckons that questions will be raised if the T20 World Cup is postponed and the Indian Premier League is held in the same window. It is reported that if the T20 World Cup is deferred then it will give a clear picture for the BCCI to host the IPL. In fact, it is known that the IPL can only take place if the T20 World Cup is postponed and subsequently, BCCI can take the empty window.
However, the ICC is not finalizing the fate of the T20 World Cup, which has left the BCCI frustrated. But it is reported by Daily Telegraph that the ICC will take a final call to postpone the global event on Friday and thus India board’s path to stage the IPL will be clear.
It would not send the right message, feels Inzamam-ul-Haq
The Indian board is targeting the September-October window to host the IPL. Inzamam-ul-Haq stated that it is known that BCCI has its control in ICC due to the revenue share but eyebrows will be raised if the domestic T20 league is played in the same window which will be left vacant by the postponement of the T20 World Cup.
“There are rumors that the World Cup was clashing with the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Australia-India series, therefore, it (T20 World Cup) won’t take place,” Inzamam-ul-Haq said in his YouTube channel on Sunday.
“The Indian board is strong and has control in the International Cricket Council (ICC). If Australia says that we cannot hold the World Cup because of the COVID-19 pandemic, then their stance will be easily accepted, but if any such kind event happens during the same time, then questions will be raised,” he said.
The former right-handed batsman added that IPL replacing T20 World Cup will not send a good message to the youngsters as they will prefer to play in the domestic leagues over International cricket.
The main issue that the ICC faces to host the T20 World Cup is handling 16 teams in the ongoing health crisis. Cricket Australia had earlier stated that the plans to stage the T20 World Cup is unrealistic.
Inzamam-ul-Haq added, “People will think, if a country could host 12 to 14 teams (16 teams), then why the ICC could not look after the teams after all Australia is such an advanced country.
“Another thing is the ICC should not be allowed to give priority to private leagues (IPL) on international cricket. This will lead to young players forcing on private leagues other than international matches.”
In all likelihood, the T20 World Cup is going to be postponed and the chances of IPL look good but the glamorous T20 league will take place overseas.
