Chennai Super Kings, the yellow army has qualified for the next round of IPL as every season. Chennai Super Kings has played 12 matches and is with 16 points which made them qualify for the next round. Dhoni’s men cannot rejoice their qualification as there is recent dip in performance of the team.
Chennai Super Kings started their IPL season with a loss against Kings XI Punjab but they regained form after the loss. After their first loss, Chennai Super Kings won six consecutive of their matches which showed their intent for qualification. They again suffered a defeat from Kings XI in their 8th match. After which they won 2 of their matches to confirm their qualification. But then there was a dip in form of yellow army which might be a problem for them to keep their second position in this year’s IPL.
Chennai Super Kings suffered consecutive defeats against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders. In the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore their star player, Dwayne Smith, who is second highest scorer of this season, failed to score which hurt them badly. Brendon McCullum is providing them with starts but not getting any huge score for them. Suresh Raina returned to some form scoring 62 in the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore but still they only managed a total of 138. As of the Chennai bowlers Ashwin is bowling pretty well and leading Chennai bowling attack but none other is helping the team out. Against Royal Challengers Bangalore the decision of giving David Hussey the last over went horribly wrong which cost them the match. Wrong decision is also affecting Chennai Super Kings. In their next match against Kolkata Knight Riders also Chennai Super Kings failed to register a win. Again Dwayne Smith failed to make an impact on the game scoring only 5 runs. Brendon McCullum again gave a start but failed to convert it into a big score. It was again Suresh Raina who clicked for Chennai scoring 65 runs but none other player made a huge impact on the game.
Form of MS Dhoni is very much important in Chennai’s success but at present he looks to be slightly out of touch, though he did put up with some great finishing performances earlier and it will be very early if blames are being put upon him for CSK’s back to back defeats. Chennai Super Kings ended with a good score of 154 against KKR last night but still their bowlers could not defend. It was Ashwin again who bowled well and other bowlers like Ben Hilfenhaus, Mohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja was just awful with their bowling performances and struggled with their line and lengths throughout the game. Shakib Al Hasan and Robin Uthappa just shattered Chennai Super Kings bowling attack. After 12 matches, Chennai stayed on with 16 points, still securing second position of the league table but might be in danger of losing it as Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals are just behind them with 14 points after 12 matches.
Chennai has to regain their form back from their recent dip in performance as the teams, who will finish in top 2, enjoys an extra advantage in the play-offs and gets two chances to reach the final. So Chennai Super Kings needs to secure second position at least for extra safety and for doing so they need to see to their bowling department. With player like Brendon McCullum leaving for International duty is blow for Chennai Super Kings but if Dhoni and Jadeja return in form then winning for Chennai is not a matter. For Chennai, keeping the second spot is their main aim and for that they have to win both of their last matches.
