Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft had received sympathy from all around after their emotional press-conferences in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal.
However, David Warner, seen by many as the mastermind behind the scandal, did not enjoy the same privilege.
The former Australia vice-captain broke down during his press conference on Saturday, but the trolls still took a shot at him. And the reason behind the same was perhaps his defensive stance in the conference.
An otherwise straightforward character, Warner made sure not to spill any beans. Presented with some tough questions, Warner did not answer them and instead relied on issuing his apology repeatedly.
He saved the day by giving the same answer – that he was there to accept full responsibility for the part he played.
Well, an interesting theory is now doing the rounds in the Australian media. As per reports, Warner did not reveal the details during the presser to get one million-dollar in return for revealing all the details.
Noted journalist David Penberthy believes there may be an ulterior motive behind Warner’s cautious approach in the press conference.
“It’s worth noting that he had the high profile Sydney PR woman Roxy Jacenko with him on the day sitting with his wife Candice at the press conference,” Penberthy said on Adelaide radio station FIVEaa.
“One of the reasons apparently that Warner didn’t answer so many questions is that he’s keeping his powder dry for a tell-all interview – part of the strategy that is being spearheaded by Roxy Jacenko.
“He’s taken a six million dollar hit in terms of his earnings. He can recoup at least a million of that from the Nine network or Seven networks.
“That’s apparently why he’s keeping his mouth shut when he’s being asked obvious questions,” he added.
Well, Warner has seriously taken a big financial hit. The attacking opener has been banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia.
In addition, he is also not playing in the Indian Premier League after being banned by the BCCI. Meanwhile, there are possibilities that Warner might seek legal actions to overturn the ban.
