Aussie speedster James Pattinson has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh due to inflammation in his back. According to reports from cricket.com.au, a cricket Australian spokesperson said that the reason behind the withdrawal of Pattinson’s name from the squad is a precautionary measure which might help him recover and prepare for the upcoming Ashes later in the year.
The paceman will continue light practice before joining full training in a month’s time. Jackson Bird has been named as Pattinson’s replacement. The spokesperson said that the inflammation in Pattinson’s back has been around the same area where he had previously suffered a stress fracture. Despite no stress fracture this time around, he has been ruled out of the series against Bangladesh to allow him to prepare better for the summer.
Meanwhile, the selectors have also named uncapped leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson to the 14 member squad. It will be his 2nd overseas trip after the leggie was also named in the squad for the series against India but wasn’t given his maiden break. Meanwhile, Pattinson has been in sensational wicket taking firm after returning to cricket in the fi al half of last summer.
Pattinson who was part of the Nottinghamshire team in the English County Cricket this season bagged a total of 32 wickets in 5 first class matches. It included two five wicket hauls and returned with best figures of 5/29. His average also read a brilliant 12.06 per wicket. He has also been a valuable lower order batsman and has scored 197 runs in the Championship at an impressive average of 49 and the highest score of an unbeaten 89.
The loss of Pattinson might be a blow for the Aussies given the fact that Mitchell Starc has already been ruled out of the two match Test series due to a foot injury. Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins will distribute the workload among them and Jackson Bird might be brought in as the 3rd seamer. The three spinners are Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson and in all likelihood, Lyon will be the 1st choice spinner. If the pitch assists the spinners, then we can’t rule out the prospect of Swepson making his debut.
