Hard work and consistent performances in the domestic scene have finally paid off for Hampshire’s James Vince. The elegant right-hander was named in England’s 12 man squad for the first test against Sri Lanka, beginning on the 19th of May. Vince has been one of the most consistent run scorers for Hampshire, and it was just a matter of time before he got his opportunity at the international level.
With batsman James Taylor’s career coming to an abrupt end, the England selectors were on the lookout for someone solid in the middle. Vince has perfectly matched the desired qualities as he is a like for like replacement of Taylor. Vince was also recently backed by the likes of Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain to do well for England.
In his interaction with the press, Vince admitted that he was glad after his selection in England’s test team. “Obviously I wasn’t there long ago and it was nice to spend some time in the middle. But this is going to be a different feeling,” Vince said. “I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m going to try and soak it all up and enjoy it,” said Vince. “It’s something I’ve been aiming for since I was a little kid, really. Definitely when I was growing up, playing for England in a Test was still the number one.”
Opening up about his experience of representing England against Pakistan in UAE, Vince said, “I’ve had the experience of the T20s in Dubai against Pakistan when it was a good feeling being able to contribute to the team. Being in the World T20 squad was a great experience as well, although obviously I would have liked to have played more of a part, he said.
