Jhulan Goswami Was Presented With A Signed England Shirt To Commemorate Her Retirement

Veteran India fast bowler Jhulan Goswami was presented with a signed England shirt to commemorate her retirement by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) at Lord’s.

ECB interim chief and former cricketer Clare Connor and outgoing England women’s head coach Lisa Keightley presented the shirt to Jhulan Goswami ahead of the third and final ODI match between India and England at Lord’s on Saturday, September 24.

Jhulan Goswami returned with the figures of 2/30 in the third WODI match, which was marred by a controversial run-out by Deepti Sharma as India completed a 3-0 clean sweep over England in the ODI series.

Chasing 170, England were tottering at 119 for 9 but were pulled out of the hole by Charlotte Dean (47) and the last batter Freya Davies. They reached 153, looking in control, as the game hurtled towards a thrilling finish.

Deepti Sharma, the off-spinner, pulled out from finishing her action in the fourth ball of the 44th over as she spotted Charlotte Dean rush out of the crease before she had released the ball. Calmly, she took off the bails even as the umpire seemingly was signalling a dead ball.

Jhulan Goswami, who made her India debut in 2002, finished her glittering career with 255 ODI wickets in 204 matches. The 39-year-old also received a guard of honour from players from both India and England during the match. Jhulan Goswami, along with her teammates, then took a victory lap to mark India’s historic series win.

Jhulan Goswami Regrets Not Winning World Cup Trophy

The legendary fast bowler was presented with a special memento ahead of the match, with India captain Harmanpreet Kaur breaking down in tears. Harmanpreet Kaur also took Jhulan Goswami for the toss for the third ODI.

“I have played two World Cup finals but couldn’t win the trophy. That remains my only regret because you prepare for a World Cup for four years. There is a lot of hard work that goes in. For every cricketer, it is a dream-come-true moment to win a World Cup,” Jhulan Goswami had said ahead of her farewell match.

“My best memory is when I got the India cap and bowled the first over because I never imagined (that I will play for India). The journey was difficult as I had to travel for two-and-half hours by local train one way every day for training. In 1997, I was a ball girl at the Eden Gardens where I saw my first women’s World Cup final. From that day, my dream was to represent India.”

The 39-year-old had become the first woman bowler to breach the 250-wicket mark in women’s ODIs in the 2022 Women’s World Cup. She got the prized wicket of England’s Tammy Beaumont to claim her 250th scalp in WODIs.

The legendary pacer made her India debut back in 2002 and remained the backbone of Team India for 2 decades. Jhulan Goswami also captained the national team during her illustrious career in 25 ODIs and 18 T20 internationals. Jhulan Goswami retired from international cricket after an illustrious career that spanned for 20 years.

Having already quit T20 internationals in 2018, the seamer finally decided to call time from Tests and ODIs as well. She made one final bow against England at the home of cricket Lord’s in the recently concluded three-match 50-overs series which India won 3-0.

The 39-year-old veteran is the leading wicket-taker in the ODI format with 255 wickets to her name. With 43 scalps, the Bengal-born quick is also the highest wicket-taker in the ODI World Cups.

Jhulan Goswami played ten major ICC tournaments for India (5 WC & 5 T20 WC) in her glorious and renowned career since 2002. She holds the record for the second-longest career in the 50-overs format that spanned 20y 261d. She became the first women cricketer to bowl 10,000 deliveries in the history of WODI Cricket in her last WODI match.
