JLT Sheffield Shield 2018-19: Watch – Steve O’Keefe’s ‘Brain Fade’ Left Opposition in Splits
As the wickets tumble in the ongoing JLT Sheffield Shield 2018-19 competition when Victoria bowlers decimate New South Wales side, the absurd run-out is doing rounds on the internet. However, a comical run-out owing to a brain fade moment has left many in splits including the opposition when Steve O’Keefe came out to bat with a runner at Drummoyne on Tuesday (March 13).
Interestingly, the bowlers bagged 17 wickets in the marquee clash.
While batting first Victorian side managed just 106 before NSW Blues end their day one at 97 for seven.
Earlier, NSW openers in the form of Daniel Hughes and Nick Larkin has put up crucial 67 runs for the first wicket. But Peter Nevill-led side has suffered a collapse while losing their seven wickets by adding just 20 runs.
So much so, they’ve lost five wickets by adding 10 runs during their innings in the heavyweight clash. Both Victoria and NSW are dominating the Shield ladder.
For Victoria, Jon Holland was the pick of the bowlers with 27 for five in 14 overs. Earlier, Harry Conway bagged five-wicket haul by giving away just 14 runs off 14 overs whereas, Victoria witnessed an extraordinary collapse in their first innings.
Coming back to Steve O’Keefe’s dismissal, it’s a rare situation to get himself in a tangle by running himself out. The commentators have termed the entire episode as ‘calamity’.
With runner being banned at the international cricket, it still holds importance in the domestic leg.
O’Keefe, who seemed to have picked a groin came out to bat with a runner. The incident took place when NSW were 135 for nine on day two of the competition.
While facing the first delivery of 52nd over of NSW’s first innings, O’Keefe’played the length ball off Scott Boland towards mid-wicket while scampering for a single, but in between, he forgot that his runner was also at the non-striker’s end.
Even though when he realised he is in trouble, O’Keefe rushed back towards the striker’s end. But in the meantime, fielder stationed at mid-wicket Holland collected the ball to throw back it to the keeper Seb Gotch. He whipped off the bails in a flash as O’Keefe failed to make it to the crease. Thus, Victorians wrapped New South Wales’ innings on 135.
In the hindsight, Victoria tops the charts of JLT Sheffield Shield 2018-19 with four wins in eight games. NSW is second on the list with as many wins in as many games.
