Joe Root Launches New ‘Traditional’ England Test Kit

Joe Root’s England will kickstart the home season for England Tests this summer as his first Test as England Captain in a new traditional Kit.

That description of his whites – with a cable-knit cream coloured jumper – came from the man himself as he helped suppliers New Balance unveil the new design which is for all England’s international teams, including Lions and women, across the formats in London on Tuesday night.

Root sported a long-sleeve jumper as he joined his fellow England captains – limited-overs leader Eoin Morgan and Heather Knight of the women’s team.

“It’s as traditional as it gets, isn’t it?” he said. “It’s what Test cricket is about.”I’ve not played in one like this for England before. I’m glad to see New Balance have embraced that, and it fits in perfectly with how we want to play Test cricket.”

The kit helped Root recall his memories in teenage of watching Michael Vaughn-led  England win against Australia in 2005 Ashes.

“The guys in 2005 who won the Ashes wore the old cable-knit jumper, and there are some great iconic moments in English cricket that are associated with clothes like this,” said the 26-year-old Yorkshire batsman.”I hope there will be many more in the future.” The new traditional kit makes him nostalgic.

“The game moves forward, and we see all sorts of different shots and innovations,” added Root.”But I think some parts of the game should always stay the same, and classic creams and cable-knit jumpers are a massive part of that. It’s great that we’ve embraced it, and I’m looking forward to trying it out for real on a pitch now.”

His new whites are part of a five-year deal with New Balance, worth £2million per year, which will provide a new blue strip for Morgan’s one-day international team and red and blue jerseys for Twenty20s.

For Root, though, it is the Test outfit which takes him right back to his childhood.

“It feels like I’m a kid again, playing my first couple of games,” he said.”It’s like my first woollen jumper my grandma knitted me, so it takes it all back to the beginning. It’s a nice way to remind yourself that, even though there are times when we’re under a lot of pressure, it’s a game we enjoy playing. We have to embrace the occasion, go out and enjoy it.”

Asked if he will be washing his whites himself, he said: “Yes, I don’t leave it in my bag between games.

“During a Test, you might be lucky enough to get it done for you – but between games, you take it home. If I turn up for the second Test and it’s small you’ll know it’s shrunk!”

Hoping to see him this summer leading England well from the front in his new kit!
