Former England captain Michael Vaughan has advised the newly-appointed England skipper Joe Root to take a leaf out of Virat Kohli’s book.
Root was appointed the new England Test captain on Monday (February 13) after Alastair Cook had stepped down from the post following a tough year that saw England drawing Test series against Pakistan, Bangladesh before losing 4-0 in India. And while Root will have a big task at hand when he leads the Three Lions in the white flannels, Vaughan feels the new skipper is ready for the captaincy.
“Joe is ready. No question,” Vaughan wrote in his Daily Telegraph column on Monday. “I get baffled when people say he is not.
“Will he be a ready-made, perfect captain from day one? Of course not. Who is?
“He has to learn on the job. But most international captains have to do that these days.”
“In terms of clout, he has everything you require to be captain. What more do you need? He is a good man. He is driven. He is always trying to improve. He never settles with what he has got,” he added.
Meanwhile, concerns have been raised that the burden of captaincy might take a toll on Joe Root’s batting. However, Vaughan feels the prolific run-scorer will take his batting to another level.
Recalling the time when his batting was affected after taking captaincy, Vaughan said Root is more likely to follow the trend set by India captain Virat Kohli – who has become arguably the best batsman in the world while his team has moved to the top of the Test rankings.
“Joe’s biggest challenge will be how captaincy affects his batting,” Vaughan said.
“It affected mine … (but) to be honest, I think he will be different to me. He is more likely to become Kohli and move his batting on to another level with the responsibility of captaincy,” he concluded.
