Jos Buttler geared up for captaincy assignment against Bangladesh

Stand-in England captain Jos Buttler will have a point to prove when his side takes on Bangladesh in their own backyard. In absence of regular skipper Eoin Morgan, who skipped the tour citing security measures, Buttler was assigned with the task of leading a vibrant England unit for the ODI leg of the tour. England’s recent form has been sparkling as they come on the back of successive series victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan at home.

Things are completely different against Bangladesh though. Since the 2015 World Cup, Bangladesh has improved tremendously and their success garnered in ODI’s at home speaks for itself. After series wins against Pakistan, India and South Africa respectively, England will be the next side under the radar of Bangladesh. With a turnover crowd supporting the home side, Buttler has a serious task lying ahead in store.

“I think something I really want to try and do is lead from the front with performance,” Buttler said. “I’m desperate to do it. It’s a young and exciting squad and it’s down to me to stand up and lead from the front. It will be a very proud moment. It’s a fantastic honour to lead the side and to walk out as captain. It will be a little bit surreal I guess but I want to enjoy the challenge, take it in my stride and be myself. I want to get on with the job and hopefully, lead the side to a series win.”

Buttler admitted that in a three-match series, the room for error was minimal. “We’ve only played one warm-up game and had a couple of practice sessions so come tomorrow we will have to have that ODI intensity and hit the ground running. A couple of times in recent series we haven’t started as well as we’d like to so that’s something everyone is very aware of. This is only a three-match series so each game is absolutely vital. To hit the ground running as best we can, it will be huge,” said Buttler.

The attacking wicketkeeper-batsman concluded by addressing the need of adapting to the conditions. “A big strength of England cricket in all forms now is looking at what we do well and concentrating on our strengths so we will be looking at what we can bring tomorrow. Adapting to the conditions will be massive,” Buttler said.
