Josh Philippe, the Australian wicket-keeper batsman has expressed that he was shocked when RCB selected him straightaway in the auction before 13th edition of IPL 2020. He was hoping to get a chance but was extremely surprised to see the kind of interest that the RCB management took in him.
Josh Philippe is yet to appear for Australia but the 23-year-old came into reckoning with his performances in Big Bash League. He has played for Perth Scorchers in 2017/18 and Sydney Sixers since 2018/19.
Josh Philippe Shocked At Being Selected Straightaway For RCB
Speaking to The Cricketer, Josh Philippe felt that a player cannot be confident of selection unless he is of Steve Smith’s class.
He said, “Unless you’re someone like Steve Smith whom everyone wants, it’s as much about luck as anything. RCB literally went for me straight away. I was in a bit of shock; I couldn’t quite believe it. I’d been told I had a chance, but nothing is set in stone and people change their minds all the time.”
The wicket-keeper batsman came into the reckoning of major franchises of IPL after performing above excellency with the Sidney Sixers in the 2019 edition of BBL where the 23-year-old right-hander ended up amassing 487 runs at a strike rate of just under 130.
The youngster from Western Australia was even adjudged Man of the Match in the final after scoring an unbeaten half-century from just 29 deliveries which helped the Sydney Sixers win the title. In 28 games in T20 so far he has scored 599 runs averaging 28.52 with 4 half centuries, the highest being an unbeaten 86.
Josh Philippe Excited At The Prospect Of Playing Alongside Virat Kohli And AB De Villiers
The 23-year-old expressed his excitement at the chance to play alongside legends like Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. He believes it is an amazing opportunity to learn from their training, approach and mindset towards cricket.
He said:“It’s surreal; AB and Virat are two of the best in the world so it’ll be great to see how they train, play, and go about their business. It’s an amazing opportunity to rub shoulders with those guys and see how the best in the world operate.”
Josh Philippe is currently a part of the Australian side which is in England to play T20 internationals. He will be travelling from England to the UAE to join the RCB squad for IPL 2020.
Josh Philippe who plays alongside the likes of Steve Smith, Moises Henriques, Peter Nevill, Jackson Bird, Josh Hazlewood, Tom Curran and Nathan Lyon in Sydney Sixers team in Big Bash League will join the likes of Aaron Finch, Virat Kohli, AB De Villiers, Chris Morris, Dale Steyn and Moeen Ali in the extravagant cash-rich IPL 2020.
