Proteas star Jean-Paul Duminy has decided to retire from Test and first-class cricket. It was revealed on Friday evening by Independent Media.
“I certainly know that my playing career is far from over, and my hope is that with the backing of Cricket South Africa, the WSB Cape Cobras, teammates, family, friends and supporters, I will be given the opportunity to continue to give my very best to the sport that I love dearly,” Duminy said.
“But after a long and careful deliberation, I have decided to retire from first-class and Test-match cricket with immediate effect.
Duminy made his Test debut in 2008 against South Africa after an impressive run at the international level in the limited overs format. In his maiden series Down Under, Duminy showcased his talent and scripted a couple of performances that became notable career highlight. He began his career with an unbeaten half-century on debut before following it up with a magical 166 in the second Test at the MCG.
The left-handed batsman cum off-spinner has been one of the most vital parts of the ODI and T20I teams, but his prowess at the Test level was on a wane since the last couple of years. He will end his Test career with 46 Tests under his belt, scoring 2103 runs at an average of 32.85 and taking 42 wickets.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the privilege and opportunity to represent my country in 46 Tests and the Cape Cobras in 108 first-class matches over the last 16 years.”
Duminy will continue to play limited-overs cricket for the Cobras and Proteas while leading the Cape Town Knight Riders in the inaugural T20 Global League this season.
Duminy’s last Test was the series opener against England at Lord’s earlier this year when 211 runs defeated the Proteas. He was axed later on raising questions over his Test future.
The 33-year-old managed only 121 runs in his last eight innings and just 17 runs in his two innings at Lord’s.
