Justin Langer Would Consider Job of Australia’s Head Coach

Justin Langer, the front-runner to step in the shoes of Darren Lehmann as Australia’s Head Coach, has said he would consider if the opportunity to take over the job comes up,

“If the opportunity came up, there would be a lot to consider. The complication is that I love my job. I love my job here. I love being on the board of the West Coast Eagles (football team). I love being with my family all the time. (Coaching Australia) would mean (travelling) 11 months of the year. I love working at WACA and working with the Scorchers. My family is all in Perth. I am a Perth boy, and I love being home. So that’s why it is complicated. I’m also involved with five or six charities here in WA. And walking away from all that is not that easy to do. I have a great life as we speak.” he told PerthNow.

Lehmann retired from Head Coach job after South Africa Test series

Langer was earlier as well touted to be Lehman’s successor when the former announced his retirement from the job post-2019 Ashes.

However, turn of events during the third Test between South Africa and Australia resulted in him calling it a day at the end of the series. Though Lehmann was cleared of any involvement in the Sandpaper Gate, the former Aussie all-rounder decided to step down from the job.

From that day, Langer’s name for the job came up, again.

As per the reports, he might be joined by Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie as Assistant coaches. The trio has been earlier on the board as well.

During Sri Lanka’s tour of Australia for three-match T20I series in the last year, Langer performed the job of Head Coach with the other two as Assistant coaches.

Ponting, later on, again performed the job during Trans-Tasman T20I tri-series.

He was being considered for the job of Head Coach of Australia in the T20I format as well. Cricket Australia seems to be in no hurry to find Lehmann’s replacement, as Australia are scheduled to play next series only in June.

The cricket association has enough time to look for prospects for the job. However, the name of Langer, along with Ponting and Gillespie, is in the air for a while.

All the three former players are currently associated with different teams in a coaching role. Langer is the coach of T20 franchise Perth Scorchers. Ponting is the Head Coach of IPL franchise, Delhi Daredevils. Gillespie is spending his time in England, as he is the Head Coach of Sussex. He was earlier associated with Kent as well.
