Kane Williamson has been announced as the new captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad after David Warner was banned for one year by Cricket Australia. David Warner will miss the Indian Premier League following a ball-tampering scandal in the third Test against South Africa.
The national cricket board has banned Warner along with former captain Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft for breaking the national team’s code of conduct.
While Smith was supposed to lead Rajasthan Royal earlier, the Australian vice-captain was supposed to lead Sunrisers Hyderabad as he has done in the previous few editions of the cash-rich league.
However, both the players will now serve a one year ban for their being the masterminds behind the ball tampering issue in the third Test which the Australians eventually lost.
Moreover, Williamson has been a part of the Sunrisers roaster for three seasons now. The Kiwi skipper is now all set to lead the franchise in the upcoming season of the IPL.
Williamson has played 15 matches for the Hyderabad based franchise and has led the team on some occasions as well.
Meanwhile, with Rajasthan Royals appointing Ajinkya Rahane as their new captain, Williamson is now the only foreign captain in the upcoming season of the IPL.
Williamson quoted:
“I’ve accepted the role to stand in as captain for this season. It’s an exciting opportunity with a talented group of players. I look forward to the challenges ahead.”
