Star New Zealand batter Kane Williamson is slow and steadily progressing on his recovery to be fully fit for the ODI World Cup 2023 in India. The Black Caps skipper was part of New Zealand’s practice session at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui and would be hoping to recover soon for the marquee event later this year.

Kane Williamson is making steady progress in recovering from a knee injury, which he sustained during the 1st game of the Indian Premier League against Chennai Super Kings.  The 33-year-old had ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, for which he underwent surgery, and is currently under rehabilitation to return to competitive cricket.

Speaking to the media, Kane Williamson opened up on his recovery from the knee injury and is hopeful of getting fit for the ODI World Cup later this year in India and admitted that injuries are part and parcel of the journey and admitted that he is working hard to get himself ready for the marquee event in India.

“If the knee is at a stage where that can be a reality, that’s great, but it very much is about getting it right and making sure it is ready to go when that time comes – whenever that time is.

“You do have some good days, then you have a few variable ones. It’s all part of the journey, it’s hard to get too far ahead of yourself because you see something really good in one place, but you still know there’s a lot of work to do”. Kane Williamson said.

The 33-year-old led New Zealand to the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup before losing to England in a super over. Wicketkeeper batter Tom Latham is expected to lead the team in the absence of their regular skipper in the marquee event.

Kane Williamson is realistic about his chance of making it into the marquee event once the regain his full fitness in the body and is hopeful of receiving a positive sign from the medical team to make it into the New Zealand squad for the World Cup.

“If I end up at a place where it’s realistic because all these bases are covered and it’s ticked off by the people who know a lot more about it than me, then that’s great,” Kane Williamson added.

Kane Williamson’s injury will be a huge blow for Kiwis, as he is a more experienced player in that setup and the Blackcaps will be hopeful of their skipper returning in full fitness for the World Cup, as his form and fitness would be crucial for the New Zealand in India.
