Apart from the present head coach Ravi Shastri, Mike Hesson, Tom Moody, Phil Simmons, Robin Singh and Lalchand Rajput were also shortlisted candidates for this interview process. Later, Simmons pulled himself out from this race.
Former Indian World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, former Indian opener Anshuman Gaekwad and the former Indian women’s team captain Shantha Rangaswamy are the CAC members who were taking these interviews.
On Friday evening, the CAC revealed the top-three candidates for India’s next head coach role. While they put the present head coach Ravi Shastri on top, Mike Hesson and Tom Moody were in the second and third positions respectively.
The BCCI has finally decided to stay with Ravi Shastri who will remain as the head coach of Indian national cricket team till the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
This news isn’t surprising, according to the present situation. Many believed that Shastri would retain his position due to the lack of big names for the interview process.
Ahead of the ongoing Caribbean tour, the Indian captain Virat Kohli strongly defended the present head coach. He claimed that he would be happy if Shastri retained his position.
We didn’t consult Virat Kohli, else we would have asked the entire team – Kapil Dev
However, the CAC member Kapil Dev has claimed at later that they haven’t taken the opinion of the Indian captain. He further added that if they took that matter than they also had to take the other Indian players’ opinions.
After that interview, Kapil Dev said, “The opinion of the captain wasn’t taken. Otherwise we would have had to take the opinions of the entire Indian team. We didn’t consult Virat Kohli, else we would have asked the entire team. We did not ask anyone.”
Kapil Dev claimed that it was a very close race between the candidates. However, Shastri’s presentation has impressed them the most.

Earlier, all the CAC members agreed that the Indian captain had the right to say about the Indian head coach matter.
