Kerala Cricket Association will follow the green protocol for the upcoming T20 match

The third and final match of the T20 series against New Zealand which is scheduled to take place on 7th November at Thiruvananthapuram will be an environment-friendly match. The viewers who will be present at the sports hub of Karyavattom, the organizers, and the sponsors will have to follow some rules regarding an environment-friendly atmosphere. The Corporation is the main organizer of this innovative idea.

Earlier Corporation, who has successfully implemented the green protocol in various events of the city, has now decided to make this match a zero waste event. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), Suchitwa Mission and District Administration have also extended their wholehearted support. The Mayor of the city V K Prasanth while talking to the media regarding this said, “We cannot fully implement green protocol due to safety reasons. But there are alternative ways to make it eco-friendly.”

The Corporation has decided to implement Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) at the venue; however, Steel Tumblers associated with green protocol will be missing.

“We are implementing EPR for the first time. PepsiCo India which supplies drinking water at the venue has agreed to collect the used bottles. We are in talks with other stakeholders to comply with the rule,” Prasanth further added.

The Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules of 2016 issued by Union Environment Ministry has introduced the concept of EPR where the producing company is responsible for collecting the waste generated from their products. Fines will be levied on the company if they fail to comply with EPR.

An official of Milma, who sells ice-creams at the venue said:

“We are selling only scoop ice creams in edible cones. So there will not be any waste generated. We are avoiding ice creams in plastic containers.”

The corporation will carry out waste management program at the venue which will be sponsored by KCA. The food which will be served from 20 stalls will be given in eco-friendly packets, and there will be two sanitation workers and one supervisor for each stall.

Twenty saplings will be planted around the stadium by delegates which aim to limit the environmental damage as a lot of paper will be used to print the tickets and in food packets. A voluntary organization, Prakriti will nurture these saplings. 200 energy-efficient LED street lights will be installed near the stadium by the corporation with the Kerala State Electricity Board.
