Kieron Pollard Earns ODI And T20I Captaincy Roles For Windies Cricket Team
On Monday (9th September), the Cricket West Indies (CWI) has appointed Kieron Pollard as the captain of Windies ODI and T20I side.
Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite were the previous captains of the Windies ODI and T20I sides respectively. Holder started his ODI captaincy from January 2015 and led the ODI side in 86 matches, out of which his team won 24 times, lost 54 times, tied twice and the other six games had no results. In last March, Holder also led the Windies side in the three T20Is and they lost all those matches.
Holder led the Caribbean ODI side in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 and 2019. While Windies were eliminated from the quarter-final in the CWC 2015, they finished in the ninth position in the latest CWC 2019.
Meanwhile, Carlos Brathwaite was leading the Windies T20I side from August 2016. Out of his 30 T20Is as a Windies captain, his team won 11 matches, lost 17 times and two had no results.
Due to the recent poor performances, the CWI has decided to change the limited-overs captaincy. The 32-year-old experienced Caribbean all-rounder Kieron Pollard will now lead the Windies limited-overs cricket teams. But, Jason Holder remains as the Test captain.
Kieron Pollard hasn’t played ODI in almost the last three years
However, Kieron Pollard hasn’t played an ODI since October 2016. His last ODI was against Pakistan at Abu Dhabi on 5th October 2016. He was in the reserve squad for the CWC 2019 but he never earned the call-up in the 15-member Windies squad.
After November 2018, Pollard has earned the T20I call-up during recently concluded T20I series against India. In that India tour of the USA and West Indies, the Caribbean side lost that three-match T20I series by 3-0. However, Pollard was the leading run-scorer in that T20I series as he scored 115 runs in three innings (average 57.50).
Pollard has played 101 ODIs and 62 T20Is where he has scored 2,289 runs (average 25.71) and 903 runs (average 21.50) respectively. Also, the right-arm medium pacer has taken 50 ODI and 23 T20I wickets respectively.
Before the latest captaincy role, Pollard has already led the Windies side in two ODIs, where his team won once and lost once.
Windies’ next international cricket assignment is touring India. In this tour, Windies will play the full series against Afghanistan between 5th November and 1st December 2019. Then, Windies and India will play the limited-overs series from 6th December to 22nd December 2019.
The CWI has also started the process to find out the head coach of the Windies men’s cricket team.
