Kolkata Knight Riders are still hopeful of seeing their star batsman Shreyas Iyer in action at some stage during the soon-to–start edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The India star is currently sidelined with a lower-back injury that he sustained earlier this month. He suffered the injury during the Indore Test against Australia while fielding and has been out of action since then. As per media reports, Shreyas Iyer has decided against going under the knife for the recurring back issue but is set to spend a good amount of time on the sidelines.

He is likely to miss at least half of the games of IPL 2023. With India set to play the World Test Championship final and World Cup in coming months, Iyer could also decide against rushing his comeback and could miss the entire IPL 2023.

KKR hopeful of Shreyas Iyer’s return:

While only time will tell how things unfold in the coming days for Shreyas Iyer, KKR are still hopeful of having his services for some games in IPL 2023. The Kolkata-based franchise are hopeful that Iyer can recover earlier than expected from his back injury concern and return to take the field in the latter stages of IPL 2023.

“Kolkata Knight Riders today announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from a back injury. While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the IPL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with the captaincy experience having led his state side in white ball cricket and the IPL experience he has had with KKR since 2018, will do a great job,” KKR said in a statement.

Missing Iyer would definitely be a big blow for KKR not only because of his captaincy but also his batting. Last year while playing his first-ever season for KKR, the right-handed batsman scored 401 runs, including 3 fifties, in 14 matches.
