Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has suggested Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take feedbacks from their old matches and work on the areas where they need to improve. He is also of the opinion that KKR opener Shubman Gill needs to give a good start to the team or otherwise he should be demoted down in the batting order.
Although KKR had a new captain in their last match against Mumbai Indians, there was no change in their results. Because of the early fall of the top-order, KKR set up a below-par target of 149 runs in front of the defending champions. Eventually, they lost the match by eight wickets.
Reviewing the match between KKR and MI, Virender Sehwag said that KKR needs to draw positive and negative from this match and need to work on them. He is also said that KKR management should back and support their players.
“It is very important for a captain to understand what his team did wrong and what the team did right. There are always positives to take out from a game, which is what KKR need to do. The team management is required to decide on the 13 players that they want to focus on and rotate in the next 6 games (in the league stage) and back them to do the job,” said Sehwag.
KKR look like a ‘bits and pieces team’: Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag added that the two-time IPL winners should come out with a strong team combination where every player needs to contribute to sealing the win.
“They need to make a strong combination and give the players the freedom to play their own game. Right now, KKR look like a ‘bits and pieces team’ where their performances depend on one or two players working out. The team needs to follow the orders and mindset of one leader which is not happening at present,” said the cricketer-turned pundit.
Talking about Shubman Gill’s performance, Virender Sehwag said that he has been given enough chances to prove himself but now the youngster needs to take his batting to second gear. He said that Gill needed to set up a good base for KKR in the powerplay.
“Gill has had many opportunities and now he needs to play in a more attacking manner in the powerplays. If he can’t do that, bring him down in the batting order and send someone else up. If you are to win, the start needs to be good. If the foundation is not laid properly, you can’t build a solid innings on it,” he concluded.
Shubman Gill has amassed 275 runs in this IPL season, including two half-centuries, in eight matches at the poor strike rate of 116.53. KKR’s next match is against SRH on Sunday.
