KL Rahul: Every Team Would Want A Player Like South African Pacer Kagiso Rabada

KL Rahul, who was recently announced as captain of the new Lucknow franchise, the Lucknow Super Giants, said that Kagiso Rabada would be a bowler that any team would be keen to sign up.

“We have seen Rabada being a key bowler for the Delhi Capitals and played a huge part in their success. Every team would want a player like Kagiso Rabada. Come on, he bowls over 145kph and is a very smart cricketer. Everyone would want someone like that,” said Rahul about the South African pace spearhead.

Kagiso Rabada was withdrawn from the recently concluded 3 matches ODI series to manage his workload. Delhi Capitals had to choose between Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje, and the team went ahead with the latter one. Kagiso Rabada was a part of the team since 2017. He has taken 76 wickets in 50 matches at an average of 20.52 and an economy of 8.21 for the franchise.

Kagiso Rabada didn’t feature in the 2018 season of the league after suffering a lower back stress fracture. Delhi Capitals had used the Right to Match card during IPL 2018 auction to pick him for INR 4.2 crores. Delhi Capitals decided to retain Kagiso Rabada before the 2019 auction and he proved his worth by picking 25 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 14.72.

The best of Kagiso Rabada came during the 2020 season when he picked 30 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 18.26 and won the purple cap for picking the most number of wickets. Kagiso Rabada’s form depleted during the 2021 season as he finished the campaign with 15 wickets in 15 matches and that might have been the reason he was not retained by the franchise.

KL Rahul Also Praised Marco Jansen And Rassie Van der Dussen

KL Rahul said that the Indian dressing room was talking about all-rounder Marco Jansen as the “next big thing” in international cricket after he played a key role in the Proteas winning the Test series 2-1. Marco Jansen played two matches for Mumbai Indians in 2021 and was making his international debut in the Test series. KL Rahul also said that Rassie van der Dussen’s ability to play spin would make him an attractive option for a lot of IPL teams.

“Marco Jansen played a few games for Mumbai Indians but he has come of his own now. He had a really good series with the red ball and that makes a little bit of a difference with how people see him. He is someone who will do really well in international cricket with the red ball. We all spoke about it after the series as well that he is going to be the next big thing in international cricket,” said Rahul.

“Van der Dussen has been performing phenomenally and is someone who plays spin really well. That is key and a very important thing that a franchise looks at when you are picking a foreign batter. We play the IPL in India and teams tend to use a lot of spinners in the middle overs so you need to be a good player of spin to get into an IPL team,” he said.

Marco Jansen made a sensational debut in the Test series as a 21-year old picked 19 wickets in 3-match Test series to script a series win against the no.1 ranked team. Marco Jansen had played in two matches picking 2 scalps for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2021 before his debut for South Africa. In his debut Test series, he was the 2nd highest wicket-taker after Kagiso Rabada (20) with 19 wickets averaging 16.47.

Having scored an unbeaten century in the first ODI match of the series and following it with an unbeaten 37 in the 288-run chase in the second, the South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen ended with a series average of 218 after scoring 52 in the 3rd ODI, where he was eventually dismissed for the first time in the series.
